Bam Bamboo Autumn / Winter Collection

Bam Bamboo Autumn / Winter CollectionDon’t let the cold weather get in the way of your workout! Bam Bamboo latest Autumn/Winter sportswear collection has brand new pieces to ensure peak performance.

You will find a wide range of bamboo sportswear suited to a wide number of activities such as running, cycling, skiing, hiking and yoga.

The new Enduro range is made from supportive, heavy weight bamboo fabric that offers great support and is ultra comfortable.

Bamboo fabric is perfect for active wear offering:

  • Climate Control – bamboo’s cellulosic structure ensures you are kept warm in the cold by trapping warm air inside the microfibres, yet cool in the heat by allowing air to circulate between the microfibres.
  • Moisture wicking – bamboo is highly absorbent, pulling moisture away from your body to the surface to evaporate.
  • Antibacterial – bamboo naturally disposes of bacteria and inhibits its growth, unlike many other fabrics. It is also antifungal.
  • Ultra soft – bamboo’s smooth microstructure ensures it is incredibly soft to the touch, and, therefore, very, very comfortable to wear.

Organic School Uniforms by Ecooutfitters

Just In! kids_lifestyle

Ecooutfitters is a range of organic school uniforms for boys and girls from 3-11 years old.

Children spend on average over 7 hours every day wearing school uniforms. Most of them are not sweat absorbent, do not allow the skin to breathe, do not feel pleasant against the skin and are treated with harmful pesticides that can aggravate or, even spark skin conditions.

While our skin absorbs up to 60% of what is comes in contact with, organic cotton is grown without chemicals and is therefore a much better choice for health, environment and wildlife. Pesticide and chemically-treated clothing, also blocks the natural balance of the skin by trapping heat and preventing it from “breathing,” often causing rashes and eczema on children’s sensitive skin.

Eczema reportedly affects over 5.7 million adults and children in the UK. The number of children in the UK who suffer from eczema and various skin complaints has seen a rise of  42% in diagnosis of the condition reported between 2001 and 2005. Wearing synthetic fabrics or even chemically treated natural fibres has been shown to aggravate these conditions.

Ecooutfitter’s organic cotton school uniforms are free of irritating or damaging chemical dyes, and contain less allergens. As a result they are less likely to trigger eczema attacks for children with sensitive skin. Organic cotton has also the advantage to be stronger and softer than conventional cotton and tends to have greater longevity and more durability when washed due to its natural composition.

Ecooutfitter’s organic school uniforms are made from cotton that is not only organically grown, but also the entire manufacturing process, such as spinning, knitting, dyeing, printing, and sewing is conducted with adherence to the strict GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) – the international gold standard for organic textiles). The whole supply chain from the field through to the manufacturing of the final product is certified, and checked against environmental and social standards.

Ecooutfitter’s range of organic school uniforms is designed for children aged 3-11y and includes Boy Trousers, Girls Trousers, Pinafore Dress and Pleated Skirt. Prices range from £14.95 to £19.95.

Organic Clothing by Rapanui

Rapanui organic Clothing

Back by popular demand, Rapanui’s Organic Clothing is now available at By Nature. Based on the Isle of Wight, Rapanui is a multi award winning ethical fashion brand. The designs of Rapanui’s Organic Clothing reflect the company’s philosophy and business ethics.

Rapanui’s Organic Clothing is not only made from eco textiles such as organic cotton, bamboo and tencel (eucalyptus) certified to Fairtrade or GOTS standards; but also made in factories powered by wind and solar renewable energy.

Following the recommendations of the Environmental Justice Foundation ‘Clean Cotton Campaign’, Rapanui ensures the social responsibility of their supply chain through Fair Wear Foundation’s Code of Labour Practices such as proper wages for factory workers, safe and healthy working conditions and reasonable working hours.

Trying to support Low Impact Farming, Rapanui has specifically chosen to work in regions where organic cotton is planted and harvested by hand, without mechanization. Because organic farming does not use petroleum based chemical fertilizer, pesticide or herbicide, it is less reliant on fossil fuels and has a lower carbon footprint. In a further effort to reduce their carbon footprint, Rapanui brings all their products to the UK by boat rather than plane.

Each Rapanui’s product has a traceability map tracing the entire product supply chain from the planting of the seed, the processing of the fabric, manufacturing, energy use and transport.

Finally they were awarded the RSPCA Good Business Awards ensuring that their products are not tested on animals, contain no dyes or inks tested on animals and use no dyes, inks or fabrics derived from animal products. The RSPCA Good Business Awards also recognise the fact that organic crops encourage biodiversity and improve the quality of the ecosystems in the natural environment.

You can view Rapanui’s latest collection here. It includes a wide selection of tee shirts for both men and women.

Packing your Eco Pregnancy Bag

Eco Maternity
Packing your pregnancy bag will help make your labour and hospital stay comfortable for you and your baby.

Many mums-to-be become very conscious of harmful chemicals contain in everyday products and textiles which can irritate baby’s sensitive skin.

So here is a list of what to take in your pregnancy bag. I have tried to keep it as sensible as possbile while highlighting eco options when available.

Don’t forget to pack in advance in case your little one decide to arrive early.

Labour:

  • Hospitals notes and /or birthplan.
  • Old nightdress or oversized tee shirt to give birth in.
  • Music, magazines, book (just in case.. keep it light an easy).
  • Cooling Spray.
  • Pillow, Yoga Ball, massage oil (such as Natalia – Labour Massage Oil), heat pack, hot water bottle and everything else that will make you feel  more comfortable and ease the pain.
  • Helios Homoeopathic Childbirth Kit (get your birth partner to study the kit before hand!).
  • Tens machine (if using – Avoid my mistake and check it before hand rather than arriving at the hospital and notice the pads are missing!).
  • Healthy Snacks (rice cake, juice, crackers… something light and easy for you to eat and something a bit more substantial for your birth partner).
  • Lots of change (for vending machines emergency)

Post Labour:
Depending what time you give birth (baby are given the all clear to leave 6-8hrs after birth) or if you have a c-section you might have to stay at the hospital overnight or even a few days. So plan for at least an overnight stay just in case.

  • Loose fitting comfortable nightdress or pyjamas (practical enough to breast feed).
  • Socks.
  • Clothes to go home in (loose fitting and comfortable)
  • Nursing Bras such as Anielina
  • Nightgown, slippers.
  • Heavy flow, night time or pregnancy sanitary towels (Natracare makes 100% organic cotton ones which are also chlorine-free).
  • A few pairs of old panties that you will not mind throwing away.
  • Camera (and phone numbers of all the people you will want to tell).
  • Toiletries (hairbrush, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste etc… and anything else to make you feel human again!).
  • Ecover Cream cleanser + sponge (in case the hospital sink / shower or bath is not as clean as you wish).
  • Arnica (Helios Homoeopathic Childbirth Kit) to make your recovery quicker.
  • Healthy Snacks (cereal bars, seeds, juice etc..  personally I also indulge in chocolate bars. I was shocked to see what the hospital had on offer for food).

Baby Gear:

  • 3-5 pyjamas
  • 3-5 bodysuits
  • Hat
  • Swaddling Blanket
  • Biodegradable Disposable nappies + Nappy Sacks such as Moltex Oko or Nature Babycare. (even if you are using real nappies for the first few days use disposables. The first bowel movements contain meconium which is black, sticky and very hard to clean)
  • Cotton Wool (Simply Gentle make a range of organic one)
  • Biodegradable Wipes (look out for Natracare, Earth Friendly Baby etc.. best to go for unscented one).
  • Organic Baby Clothes to go home in (make sure if the weather is not that warm that you have something warm enough)
  • Car Seat + Organic Blanket (if it’s cold)
