Adopt a Veg This Christmas – The Flexitarian

Adopt a Veg This Christmas via The Flexitarian

Adopt a Veg
My husband is very fond of parsnips so I have just adopted one as a Christmas present. Not any parsnip though, but the ‘Guernsey Half Long’  a French heirloom variety that is more than a 150 years old.

I had never given much thought about forgotten vegetables until a couple of year ago when we bought some funny looking purple carrots at a local farmer’s market. It turns out carrots used to be purple until the late 16th century when Dutch growers experimented with them and decided they should be orange. Last year I also came across The Forgotten Foods programme an very interesting project aiming to preserve edible biodiversity around the world.

I first became aware of the Heritage Seed Library when selling their Adopt a Veg scheme at By Nature.  The library is part of Garden Organic the UK’s leading organic growing charity.

The Heritage Seed Library works to conserve a unique collection of rare and endangered vegetable varieties  not featured in modern seed catalogues. By adopting a veg you’re supporting the work of Garden Organic, sharing skills and knowledge within schools and local communities, researching and promoting best organic practice to thousands of individuals, and helping to grow and preserve our seed heritage.  Currently about 200 varieties feature in their Seed Catalogue.

You can adopt a wide range of  vegetables such as: Lazy Housewife French bean, My Girl tomato and the Tutankhamun pea. The Heritage Seed Library also offers  a few varieties complete with a packet of seeds that you can grow at home and help to protect.

The Bat Conservation Trust

Every Christmas we give our kids a charity gift in their names. They love the magazines, learn something useful and our money is put to good work. This year we chose WWF and the Bat Conservation Trust.

So if, like us, you fancy doing something a bit special for some of Britain’s most at-risk mammals this Christmas, how about going a bit batty? After all, aside from Santa’s Reindeer, bats are the only flying mammals in the world!

Buy an individual membership for yourself or a friend between 1-25th December and not only do you get to help secure the future for bats but you also get a special free gift of a fabulous cotton bag emblazoned with the Bat Conservation Trust’s logo. You will also get discounts to courses and conferences. Standard individual membership is £2.50 a month or  £30 per annum, paid annually or as a one off and discounts are available. Their fab batty bag also comes with family memberships bought at this time.

For the Little-uns there is the Young  Batworkers’ Club membership to the Bat Conservation Trust for just £12 a year for each child.  Not only will they get endless enjoyment learning all about bats, but those vital funds will help conserve bats so their children in turn can be Young Bat Workers’ Club members.  Membership includes a subscription to the Young Batworker magazine, a special badge, a bat calendar and lots of batty things like stickers and postcards and fact sheets.  It’ll be like all their Christmases have come at once!

24 Good Deeds – A Different Kind of Advent Calendar

24 Good Deeds - A Different Kind of Advent Calendar

Do something different this Christmas with the “24 Good Deeds” advent calendar.

Forget chocolate, behind each door hides an international aid project that is concretely and visibly supported through the calendar. Two examples are the vaccination of an endangered child in Guatemala or the contribution of bricks for a school being built in Burkina Faso. Every day, you will learn about another project which is supported thanks to your donation.

You can receive the calendar in exchange for a donation of € 24 or more. What the 2013 donations are exactly going to achieve and who will benefit from them is being revealed each day behind the calendar doors (there is also more detailed, on the 24 Good Deeds website). Until then this year’s projects will remain secret! Last year 120,000 Euros donations could be raised through the calendar and for instance 10,000 children in Guatemala could be vaccinated.

The “24 Good Deeds” Advent calendar is the perfect gift – and a great opportunity to give yourself a treat, because helping others brings joy and happiness where it is most needed.

You can order the “24 Good Deeds” Advent calendar online from www.24gutetaten.de. They are posted from Germany so allow 3-5 days for delivery.

Christmas Paper Decorations

christmas_deco

Loving these Christmas Decorations from A Few Things from My Life. Great Xmas craft for the kids and looks good too!

“It is really easy. All you need is to cut out the shape of the trees and fish from the paper of your choice and you can create according to your own imagination. If you cut out different sized tree templates and bend them in the middle you can create forest. If you don’t bend it you can have greeting cards and from the small ones name tags for gifts or on the Christmas table. When you decorate fish from both sides you can use them as pending decoration. Our “magical“ fish have scales from one side only. On the other one we will write wishes for our loved ones and friends. Wish you much joy in creating.” (source: A Few Things from My Life)
